How to itemise Vale and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Vale

Vale is a squishy burst mage who relies entirely on landing his crowd control setup into a devastating area-of-effect combination. His kit centers around using Windblow to knock up enemies, pulling them into the center of Windstorm, and finishing them with Wind Blade. Because his ultimate Windstorm has immense Magic Power scaling upon its explosion, this build prioritizes maximizing raw magic power early while compensating for his low durability. Additionally, Vale needs mobility to position for his skill shots; while his passive Windtalk provides extra Movement Speed upon securing kills or assists, ramping up early magic damage ensures he reliably converts setups into kills to trigger those passive stacks quickly.

Arcane Boots

Early

Arcane Boots provide essential early magic penetration and movement speed. Early mobility helps Vale position his Windblow whirlwind to catch enemies, while the penetration ensures that his early poke with Wind Blade deals maximum damage against mid lane opponents. This early damage threat allows Vale to participate in early fights around the Turtle and start accumulating stacks for his passive Windtalk right from the opening minutes.

Clock of Destiny provides Vale with essential maximum HP and scaling magic power through its passive Time. Since Vale has very fragile durability, the added health helps him survive aggressive dives while staying in lane. As the item gains stacks over time, it progressively boosts his magic power, building the foundation needed for his high-ratio abilities like Windstorm and Wind Blade to deliver game-changing area burst in mid-game skirmishes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Time: Gains 20 extra Max HP and 4 extra Magic Power every 20s, capped at 15 stacks.

Lightning Truncheon synergizes perfectly with Clock of Destiny to dramatically increase Vale's burst potential. Its passive Resonate triggers extra magic damage and a decaying movement speed boost whenever a skill deals damage. When Vale lands Windblow to knock up enemies into Windstorm, Resonate triggers instantly across multiple targets, adding immediate burst damage and granting movement speed that helps Vale reposition safely or chase down fleeing enemies.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Resonate: Every 6s, the next skill that deals damage will resonate, dealing Magic Damage equal to 120% Magic Power against up to 3 enemies and increasing Movement Speed by 30% that decays over 2s.

Holy Crystal takes advantage of Vale's massive magic power scaling, particularly the high scaling multiplier on Windstorm. Its passive Mystery scales extra magic power percentage with hero level. Once equipped, Vale's complete skill rotation of Windblow, Windstorm, and Wind Blade becomes capable of instantly deleting entire enemy teams caught inside the windstorm explosion, ensuring every full combo results in guaranteed kills and assists.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mystery: Gains 21%-35% extra Magic Power (scales with level).

Fleeting Time solves Vale's ultimate availability issue during team fights. Its passive Timestream drastically reduces the remaining cooldown of Windstorm whenever Vale secures a hero kill or assist. Since Vale naturally stacks movement speed from Windtalk on kills and assists, Fleeting Time allows him to repeatedly unleash his ultimate Windstorm in quick succession during multi-kill team fights around major objectives like the Lord.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Timestream: Hero kills or assists reduce the Ultimate's current cooldown by 30%.

Immortality

Situational

Immortality directly addresses Vale's extreme vulnerability in the late game. Its passive Immortal provides a second life upon death, granting a protective shield and revived health. Because Vale is a high-priority squishy target for enemy assassins, this safety net allows him to survive lethal dive attempts, stand his ground, and potentially cast a final Windblow or Windstorm to turn the fight in his team's favor.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When facing high burst assassins or aggressive jumpers

Prioritize buying Immortality earlier before completing Fleeting Time. Vale's low base durability makes him an easy target for burst damage, so gaining the resurrection passive early helps him survive surprise attacks and survive long enough to drop his full Windstorm combination during defensive clashes.

When constantly fighting in fast-paced mid-game skirmishes

Rush Fleeting Time right after Lightning Truncheon before building Holy Crystal. Having the ultimate cooldown reduction from Timestream on every kill or assist allows Vale to cast Windstorm in consecutive fights, enabling continuous crowd control and damage output as your team takes control of objectives.

When lagging behind in gold or early skirmishes

Focus on completing Clock of Destiny as quickly as possible before buying tier two damage items. The steadily accumulating HP and magic power stacks from its Time passive give Vale crucial survivability and scaling damage, allowing him to stay safe while farming back into the match.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Vale's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
