How to itemise Popol and Kupa and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Popol and Kupa

Popol and Kupa rely entirely on Kupa inheriting Popol's attributes and passive equipment effects through We Are Friends to overwhelm lane opponents. Because Kupa takes front-line damage and applies attack effects alongside Popol, raw physical attack and attack speed convert directly into double the pressure during Bite 'em, Kupa! skirmishes. This build prioritizes early attack speed and on-hit damage to maximize Kupa's aggressive harassment, transitioning into massive physical power to boost Popol's enhanced basic attack from his passive and increase the shield from Kupa, Help!. By pairing attack modifiers with late-game survival, Popol maintains relentless objective control and single-target lockdown without leaving Kupa vulnerable.

Item by item

Swift Boots

Early

Swift Boots provide essential early attack speed and mobility, allowing Popol to reposition quickly while commanding Kupa. Because Kupa inherits Popol's attack speed attributes through We Are Friends, buying movement speed early enhances laning trades. It allows Popol to safely set traps using Popol's Surprise and follow up on Bite 'em, Kupa! stuns without putting himself in harm's way before his core offensive items are complete.

As Popol's first major damage item, Demon Hunter Sword excels because Kupa inherits passive equipment effects from We Are Friends. Every lunge from Bite 'em, Kupa! and rapid assault allows both Popol and Kupa to slice through high-health targets rapidly. The extra HP-based damage turns Kupa into a terrifying duelist, drastically increasing early-game laning pressure, neutral objective kill speed, and single-target shredding against enemy heroes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Devour: Basic Attacks deal 8% of the target's current HP as extra Physical Damage (capped at 60 against minions).

Windtalker

Core

Windtalker boosts attack speed and movement speed while introducing magic damage splash that passes to Kupa via We Are Friends. The increased attack frequency allows Popol to trigger enhanced basic attacks far more frequently. Additionally, the extra mobility helps Popol reposition after using Kupa, Help! to gain shields, letting the pair chase down immobilized targets caught in the frost zone of Popol's Surprise.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Typhoon: Every 5-2s (reduced by 0.2s for each Basic Attack), the next Basic Attack will hit up to 3 enemy units for 150-362 Magic Damage. (This attack can Crit and the damage increases to 200% against Minions.)

Popol frequently weaves skills between attacks, making Endless Battle ideal. Casting Bite 'em, Kupa! or Kupa, Help! triggers true damage on Popol's next basic attack, augmenting his burst output. The extra physical attack directly increases Kupa's maximum HP and the shield strength provided by Kupa, Help!, while the extra sustain keeps both partners healthy during prolonged team fights around the Turtle or Lord.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Divine Justice: After casting a skill, the next Basic Attack within 3s deals 60% Physical Attack as extra True Damage (1.5s cooldown).

Blade of Despair provides the ultimate physical attack spike for Popol's kit. The massive stat boost directly increases the damage of Bite 'em, Kupa!, strengthens the shield on Kupa, Help!, and dramatically increases the extra physical attack scaling on Popol's enhanced basic attack from We Are Friends. Against low-health targets, the passive power surge ensures Popol and Kupa can instantly execute fleeing enemies.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

In the late game, Popol becomes a primary target for enemy assassins. Immortality provides a crucial second chance upon death, granting a protective shield and reviving Popol so he can immediately cast Kupa, Help! for additional shielding and crowd control. This revival window gives Popol time to pray and bring Kupa back if needed, ensuring the duo remains active during game-deciding team fights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy enemy frontline tanks and high HP fighters

Prioritize Demon Hunter Sword immediately after boots before any utility items. Since Kupa inherits passive equipment effects through We Are Friends, rushing this item allows the duo to shred high-HP targets during Bite 'em, Kupa! engagements, giving Popol early control over the Gold Lane and faster objective clears.

When facing high burst aggression or dive threats

Delay Blade of Despair to build Immortality earlier in the late-game transition, or prioritize Endless Battle right after core items. The shield scaling from Kupa, Help! paired with extra physical attack and survival passives keeps Popol alive when enemies attempt to bypass Kupa and focus Popol down directly.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Popol and Kupa's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
