How to itemise Xavier and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Xavier

Xavier relies heavily on spamming skills to trigger and maintain his passive Transcendence, which grants maximum skill enhancement and reduced cooldowns. However, his heavy reliance on Infinite Extension and Mystic Field to zone and immobilize targets drains his mana rapidly and demands extreme cooldown reduction. This build solves his mana reliance while drastically cutting his cooldowns, allowing him to endlessly reset Transcendence through constant skill hits. Additionally, by scaling his magic power and penetration alongside damage-over-time burns, Xavier transforms from a setup mage into an endgame global threat capable of wiping enemy teams with Dawning Light.

Arcane Boots

Early

Early game, Xavier needs initial magic penetration to make Infinite Extension hit harder during laning skirmishes around the Turtle. The movement speed helps him position quickly to deploy Mystic Field for crowd control. Since he lacks natural mobility skills beyond passive movement speed triggers, getting boots early allows him to roam effectively to support other lanes and set up long-range skill combinations safely from a distance.

This item is fundamental for Xavier as his passive Transcendence demands constant skill usage. The continuous mana regeneration eliminates his severe resource constraints, allowing him to repeatedly combine Infinite Extension with Mystic Field to immobilize enemies. Furthermore, reducing his ability cooldowns enables him to maintain Stage III status indefinitely, turning him into a relentless artillery mage who can keep entire enemy teams perpetually zoned or snared during teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mana Spring: Regenerates 15% Max Mana every 10s.

Because Infinite Extension pierces multiple targets and extends its range, it easily applies continuous magic damage burn to entire enemy lines. When combined with the immobilization from Mystic Field, trapped targets are forced to take maximum percentage-based health damage over time. This item converts Xavier's control abilities into severe threat pressure, making him effective against durable frontliners who attempt to absorb his skillshots while invading or contesting map objectives.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Scorch: Burn targets for 3s, dealing Magic Damage equal to 1.5% of the target's Max HP per second.

Xavier's Ultimate, Dawning Light, instantly triggers his Transcendence state and deals global damage. Securing kills or assists drastically refunds Dawning Light's remaining cooldown, allowing Xavier to unleash his Ultimate multiple times in quick succession during prolonged mid-to-late game engagements. This rapid refresh cycle keeps him continuously empowered in Stage III, ensuring his skill widths remain maximized and his baseline ability cooldowns remain drastically reduced throughout entire teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Timestream: Hero kills or assists reduce the Ultimate's current cooldown by 30%.

As the match progresses into late game, Xavier requires massive magic power scaling to convert his wide-area skills into lethal burst damage. Holy Crystal exponentially boosts his magic attack, tremendously increasing the damage output of Infinite Extension and Dawning Light. With this power spike, a single hit from his Ultimate can decimate squishy enemy carry heroes from across the map or instantly finish off retreating opponents.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mystery: Gains 21%-35% extra Magic Power (scales with level).

Late game enemies inevitably build magic defense to survive Xavier's continuous artillery barrages. Divine Glaive counters this by converting enemy magic defense directly into extra magic penetration. This ensures that even high-defense targets cannot withstand the combination of Mystic Field and Dawning Light. Finishing this item guarantees that Xavier's entire enhanced kit bypasses frontline defenses, letting him obliterate any target trapped within his empowered zones.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Spellbreaker: When attacking an enemy, gains 0.1% extra Magic Penetration for each point of the enemy's Magic Defense, capped at 20%.

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When the enemy team stacks heavy Magic Defense early

Prioritize Divine Glaive earlier, right after your core mana item. While Glowing Wand provides consistent burn damage, Divine Glaive ensures your magic penetration scales against high defense targets, keeping your Infinite Extension and Dawning Light impactful during early objective contests around the Lord and Turtle.

When teamfights revolve around rapid back-to-back kills

Rush Fleeting Time immediately after Enchanted Talisman. Maximizing the cooldown reset on Dawning Light allows you to instantly enter the Transcendence state repeatedly. This keeps your skill areas wide and cooldowns extremely short, letting you snowball skirmishes through constant immobilization via Mystic Field.
