How to itemise Sun and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Sun

Sun relies heavily on his Doppelgangers created via Swift Exchange, Endless Variety, and Instantaneous Move to overwhelm opponents through sheer attack volume and trigger attack effects multiple times. However, Sun lacks innate burst and can be vulnerable during early lane trades in the EXP Lane. This build focuses on maximizing hit frequency, physical offense, and sustained combat healing. By combining attack effects with his ultimate passive Simian God, which reduces enemy Physical Defense and restores HP whenever Doppelgangers deal damage, Sun transforms from a fragile split-pusher into an unstoppable dueling threat capable of melting objectives, taking down the Turtle or Lord, and dominating enemy heroes in prolonged skirmishes.

Build order

  2. 2 Corrosion Scythe
  3. 3 Demon Hunter Sword
  4. 4 War Axe
  5. 5 Brute Force Breastplate
  6. 6 Blade of Despair

Item by item

Sun requires initial physical durability to survive early trades in the EXP Lane against aggressive lane bullies. Equipping Warrior Boots grants him Valor, providing essential Physical Defense as he takes Physical Damage. This protection allows Sun to safely poke with Endless Variety and manage minion waves without getting chunked down, ensuring he stays healthy until his attack speed core items are completed.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Valor: Gain 4 extra Physical Defense for 3s when taking Physical Damage, up to 20.

Corrosion Scythe is vital for Sun because his Doppelgangers inherit attack effects. The Corrosion passive adds extra Physical Damage and slows enemy targets upon landing Basic Attacks. When combined with Instantaneous Move, Sun and his illusions close the gap and lock down fleeing targets instantly. This item fundamentally upgrades his laning phase, turning his poked enemies into easy, inescapable targets while massively boosting his objective push capability.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Corrosion: Basic Attacks gain 80 extra Physical Damage and slow the target by 8% (halved for ranged Basic Attacks) for 1.5s. Stacks up to 5 times.

Demon Hunter Sword dramatically amplifies Sun's dueling power against tanky opponents. Its Devour passive causes Basic Attacks to deal extra Physical Damage based on the target's current HP. Because Sun's Doppelgangers summoned by Swift Exchange and Endless Variety apply attack effects, this item multiplies his percentage-based damage output rapidly. It also pairs perfectly with Simian God, allowing Sun to shred Physical Defense while sustaining his health through constant hits.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Devour: Basic Attacks deal 8% of the target's current HP as extra Physical Damage (capped at 60 against minions).

War Axe

Core

War Axe synergies with Sun's extended fight style. The Fighting Spirit passive grants accumulating Physical Attack and Spell Vamp when dealing damage, eventually adding extra True Damage at max stacks. Since Sun and his clones hit targets repeatedly with Instantaneous Move and Basic Attacks, he quickly reaches maximum stacks. This drastically increases his sustained damage output and survivability, allowing him to stay grounded during team fights and objective takes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Fighting Spirit: Dealing damage grants 12 extra Physical Attack and 2% extra Spell Vamp per second for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Deal 10% extra True Damage according to Base Damage at full stacks.####[C8This effect is reduced to 50% for Marksmen, Mages, and Supports.]

As fights transition into full team engagements, Sun needs defenses to avoid being burst down before his clones establish control. Brute Force Breastplate offers the Brute Force passive, granting additional Physical Attack, extra Movement Speed, and Control Duration Reduction after dealing damage. This mobility and crowd control resilience ensure Sun can maneuver effectively, chase down priority targets, and continually heal via Simian God without being disabled.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Brute Force: Each second after dealing damage, gain 6 extra Physical Attack and Magic Power and 2% extra Movement Speed for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Gain 15% extra Control Duration Reduction at full stacks.

Blade of Despair serves as the ultimate damage capstone for Sun's build. Its Despair passive boosts Physical Attack significantly when damaging non-Minion enemies below half health. Once Sun and his clones shred enemy defenses using Simian God, this item ensures low-health targets are executed almost instantly. Finishing this item allows Sun to rapidly execute enemy backlines during teamfights or quickly dismantle high-priority targets.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy physical lane pressure

Rush Warrior Boots before completing any attack items. This provides immediate physical protection while trading in the EXP Lane, allowing Sun to safely poke with Endless Variety and farm until he can comfortably purchase Corrosion Scythe.

When facing high health tanky compositions

Prioritize Demon Hunter Sword right after securing boots. The percentage damage from Devour, combined with the defense reduction from Simian God, allows Sun and his Doppelgangers to quickly melt high-health targets and secure early objectives like the Turtle.

When heavily targeted by crowd control

Accelerate Brute Force Breastplate earlier in the item progression. The Control Duration Reduction from the Brute Force passive helps Sun break free from disables faster, ensuring his Doppelgangers continue attacking to trigger healing from Simian God.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Sun's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
