How to itemise Layla and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Layla

Layla possesses devastating long-range damage thanks to Destruction Rush increasing her basic attack distance and Malefic Gun rewarding far-range positioning. However, her complete lack of natural mobility makes her highly vulnerable to aggressive divers. This build solves her extreme fragility by stacking movement speed and critical strike synergies, enabling her to kite safely. By improving her mobility, Layla can consistently trigger the extra range and speed from Malefic Bomb while maintaining distance to proc Void Projectile marks. The combination of critical damage and safety tools transforms her from an immobile target into an inescapable late-game marksman who controls fights from extreme range.

Item by item

Swift Boots

Early

Early Attack Speed allows Layla to clear Gold Lane minion waves efficiently and apply her basic attacks faster after triggering Malefic Bomb. The baseline movement speed helps her maintain optimal distance from enemy laners to make full use of her Malefic Gun passive.

Windtalker

Core

Windtalker gives Layla essential movement speed to offset her lack of dashes, alongside attack speed and critical chance. Its Typhoon passive delivers extra magic damage that can crit, improving her wave clear and helping her poke multiple enemies from safety.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Typhoon: Every 5-2s (reduced by 0.2s for each Basic Attack), the next Basic Attack will hit up to 3 enemy units for 150-362 Magic Damage. (This attack can Crit and the damage increases to 200% against Minions.)

Providing crucial lifesteal and critical stats, this item keeps Layla healthy in lane and skirmishes. Its Frenzy passive awards extra Attack Speed whenever she lands a critical hit, turning her long-range basic attacks into a rapid stream of sustained damage.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Frenzy: Critical strikes grant 20% Attack Speed for 2s.

Berserker's Fury drastically enhances Layla's critical output. The Doom passive grants bonus Physical Attack upon scoring a critical strike, boosting the scaling on her Malefic Bomb and allowing her long-range Destruction Rush to reliably execute low-health targets.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Doom: Critical strikes grant 5% extra Physical Attack for 2s.

Offering physical attack and cooldown reduction, Great Dragon Spear complements her skill-heavy playstyle. Its Supreme Warrior passive provides a burst of Movement Speed after using Destruction Rush, helping Layla reposition immediately after firing her ultimate.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Supreme Warrior: After casting an Ultimate, increase Movement Speed by 15% for 7.5s. This effect has a 15s cooldown.

Rose Gold Meteor

Situational

Rose Gold Meteor provides physical attack, magic defense, and physical lifesteal. The Lifeline passive shields Layla and grants decaying movement speed when her HP drops low, giving her a vital defensive cushion against enemy mages and assassins attempting to burst her down.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Lifeline: When taking damage that reduces HP below 30%, gain a 420-910 shield (increases with level) and 50% Movement Speed that rapidly decays over 3s. This effect has a 60s cooldown.

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy magic damage or burst assassins

Build Rose Gold Meteor earlier right after Berserker's Fury. The Lifeline shield and magic defense prevent enemy burst from killing Layla before she can gain distance with Malefic Bomb.

When sustained laning and trading is required early

Purchase Haas' Claws right after Swift Boots prior to Windtalker. The early lifesteal ensures Layla can recover health while poking from afar with her Malefic Gun passive.
