How to itemise Hylos and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Hylos

Hylos thrives on remaining continuously in close proximity to enemies, melting them with Ring of Punishment while sustaining massive damage. His passive, Thickened Blood, converts additional Mana into Max HP and lets him spend health when Mana runs dry. This build focuses on maximizing Hylos's raw health pool and aura damage to amplify his frontline presence. Because Ring of Punishment continuously drains resources, sustaining health and slowing nearby attackers is crucial. By rushing boots and aura items, Hylos can initiate aggressively with Law and Order, lay down Glorious Pathway to command team fights, and remain an unkillable disruption engine that burns surrounding foes to ashes.

Item by item

Tough Boots - Encourage

Early

Tough Boots - Encourage provides early mobility and Roam blessings essential for Hylos during early ganks. Movement speed allows Hylos to close the gap quickly, charge up Law and Order, and deliver a guaranteed single-target stun. Reducing the control effects he suffers keeps him moving freely on his Glorious Pathway, ensuring he stays within range to continuously burn enemies with Ring of Punishment without getting locked down and kite-killed.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Passive - Encourage: Success

Cursed Helmet synergizes directly with Hylos's immense health pool from Thickened Blood. The passive Burning Soul aura scales off his Max HP, dealing constant magic damage to surrounding units. Combined with Ring of Punishment, Hylos becomes a dual-aura menace during team fights. This item solves Hylos's wave clear issues and forces enemy heroes to take heavy continuous damage whenever he sticks close to them after initiating with Law and Order.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Burning Soul: Deals Magic Damage equal to 0.6% of the hero's Max HP per second to nearby enemies. This damage is increased by 140% to 350% against creeps and minions (scales with level).

Dominance Ice grants Arctic Cold, which lowers the Attack Speed of nearby enemy heroes. When combined with Ring of Punishment, which already lowers enemy Attack Speed and Movement Speed per stack, Hylos cripples enemy physical attackers and marksmen completely. This neutralizing effect gives Hylos total control during frontline engagements, allowing him to charge ahead with Law and Order while shutting down high attack speed threats trying to melt his massive health bar.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Arctic Cold: Reduces the Attack Speed of nearby enemy heroes to 70% of normal.

Athena's Shield

Situational

High health pools without magic defense leave Hylos vulnerable to burst mages. Athena's Shield provides immediate magic damage reduction via its Shield passive upon taking magic damage. This stops heavy burst spells from carving through the HP gained from Thickened Blood. With this protection, Hylos can safely lead the charge on Glorious Pathway, ignoring initial mage burst to lock down key targets with Law and Order and maintain his Ring of Punishment.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Shield: Upon taking Magic Damage, gains 25% Magic Damage Reduction for 3s (applied before taking damage). Regains this effect 5s after leaving combat.

Guardian Helmet provides massive Max HP, directly boosting Hylos's durability and scaling both Thickened Blood and Cursed Helmet's passive damage. Its Recovery passive restores a percentage of his Max HP over time. This continuous healing complements the health recovery on his ultimate, Glorious Pathway. With Guardian Helmet, Hylos can re-engage quickly after skirmishes without returning to base, keeping his Ring of Punishment ready for back-to-back objectives like Lord contests.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Recovery: Regenerates 2.5% Max HP per second (reduced to 0.5% Max HP per second over 5s after taking damage).

As the primary initiator who uses Glorious Pathway to charge deep into the enemy team, Hylos often absorbs all enemy crowd control and primary damage skills. Immortality grants the Immortal passive, reviving Hylos upon death with a portion of Max HP and a shield. This second life gives Hylos another opportunity to toggle Ring of Punishment, land a clutch Law and Order stun, and secure the fight for his allies.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy magic burst compositions

Prioritize Athena's Shield immediately after completing Cursed Helmet. Delay Dominance Ice if the enemy team relies heavily on instant magic damage rather than physical attack speed. This ensures Hylos does not get deleted before reaching enemies to apply Ring of Punishment and allows him to safely initiate engagements using Glorious Pathway.

Against attack speed reliant physical threats

Rush Dominance Ice right after your boots. Combining the Arctic Cold passive with the attack speed reduction stacks from Ring of Punishment shuts down fast-hitting physical heroes early. This mitigation preserves Hylos's massive HP pool from Thickened Blood, allowing him to dive aggressively under towers with Law and Order.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Hylos's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
