How to itemise Hanabi and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Hanabi

Hanabi relies heavily on her passive, Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage, which allows her Basic Attacks to bounce between targets while inheriting Attack Effects. To maximize her teamfight presence and maintain the crowd-control-immune shield from Ninjutsu: Equinox, she requires high Attack Speed and direct hit modifiers rather than reliance on critical strikes. This Trinity attack speed setup utilizes Corrosion Scythe, Demon Hunter Sword, and Golden Staff to continuously proc hit effects through her bouncing blades, rapidly recharging her shield while shredding entire enemy teams. Late-game additions like Blade of Despair and Malefic Roar ensure her bounce damage scales hard against squishies and tanky frontline targets alike.

Swift Boots

Early

Provides essential Movement Speed and Attack Speed in the early phase. For Hanabi, faster attacks directly increase the frequency of Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage bounces during laning trades. It allows her to poke enemies efficiently using Ninjutsu: Soul Scroll marks while staying mobile enough to maintain positioning and keep her Ninjutsu: Equinox shield safe from incoming poke damage.

This core item grants bonus Physical Damage and applies a stacking slow on Basic Attacks. Because Hanabi's passive Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage inherits Attack Effects on bounce, Corrosion Scythe slows multiple clustered enemies at once. The extra Attack Speed boosts her active Ninjutsu: Equinox uptime, letting her constantly refresh her crowd-control-immune shield while tethering fleeing foes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Corrosion: Basic Attacks gain 80 extra Physical Damage and slow the target by 8% (halved for ranged Basic Attacks) for 1.5s. Stacks up to 5 times.

Adds tank-shredding power by dealing current health percentage damage on hit. Since her passive Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage spreads Attack Effects across bouncing targets, Demon Hunter Sword allows Hanabi to melt high-health frontliners and secondary targets simultaneously. The steady damage output also converts directly into extra shield durability whenever she activates Ninjutsu: Equinox during major teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Devour: Basic Attacks deal 8% of the target's current HP as extra Physical Damage (capped at 60 against minions).

Converts critical chance into massive Attack Speed and triggers on-hit effects extra times. This synergizes perfectly with her attack-effect build, accelerating the procs from Corrosion Scythe and Demon Hunter Sword. It transforms Hanabi into a relentless attack speed machine, ensuring her passive Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage spreads maximum chaos while keeping her Ninjutsu: Equinox shield perpetually topped off from damage dealt.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Swift: Every 1% extra Crit Chance gained is converted into 1% extra Attack Speed.

Provides a massive surge of raw Physical Attack, greatly boosting her overall output. This high base damage elevates the non-decaying bounce damage on targets marked by Ninjutsu: Soul Scroll and enhances her ultimate Forbidden Jutsu: Higanbana. Furthermore, the bonus damage against low-health targets helps her clean up low-HP enemies during hectic late-game clashes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Malefic Roar

Situational

Enables Hanabi to pierce heavy enemy Physical Defense by granting scaling Physical Penetration based on the target's armor. As tanks stack defensive items late in the game, Malefic Roar ensures her primary attacks and Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage bounces retain their lethal power, preventing her bounce damage from dropping off against armored frontlines.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Armor Buster: When attacking an enemy, gains 0.125% extra Physical Penetration for each point of the enemy's Physical Defense, capped at 40%.

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When the enemy team builds high physical armor early

Prioritize completing Malefic Roar earlier right after your core attack speed items. This ensures her attack-effect bounces from Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage punch through physical defense, maintaining effective shield generation via Ninjutsu: Equinox even when fighting tanky opponents.

When facing heavy frontline tanks with high health pools

Rush the combination of Demon Hunter Sword and Golden Staff right after boots. This maximizes percentage-based on-hit damage, allowing her passive Ninjutsu: Petal Barrage to rapidly shred tanky frontlines while keeping her active Ninjutsu: Equinox shield continually charged.
